September arrives and everything begins to change.
The days get shorter. The air gets cooler. Leaves change colour. Landscapes transform.
And we accept it.
Actually, we do more than accept change. We expect it.
Styles change. Trends change. Technology changes. Baby names come in and out of fashion. What was once hopelessly outdated suddenly becomes cool again.
What's old becomes new.
We live in a world that is constantly evolving, and for the most part, we've decided that's a good thing.
So why doesn't the same rule apply to women's bodies?
Why are we expected to remain somehow untouched by time?
Our bodies change because our lives change.
We have babies. We gain weight. We lose weight. Hormones change. Menopause arrives. Skin softens. Breasts change. Waists change. Gravity does what gravity does.
We live.
And yet, instead of seeing those changes as a perfectly natural part of being alive, women are constantly being told we should be trying to reverse them.
Fix them.
Hide them.
Fight them.
Because God forbid someone thinks we've "let ourselves go."
Men, on the other hand?
Apparently, they got a different rule book.
Somewhere along the way, we invented the dad bod.
And not only is the dad bod acceptable, it's attractive.
It's a thing.
Women talk about loving a dad bod. Men can have a softer stomach, a few extra pounds, a body that very clearly doesn't spend six days a week at the gym, and nobody stages an intervention.
He's comfortable.
He's sexy.
He's got a dad bod.
But where's the mom bod?
Why isn't that a thing we celebrate?
A woman's body changes after having children and somehow that's not sexy and relaxed. That's "letting herself go."
She's not taking care of herself.
She's gotten sloppy.
She needs to "get her body back."
Back from where?
It didn't go anywhere.
It's right there.
It changed.
Just like everything else in this world is allowed to change.
So explain something to me.
Why is a dad bod something women are encouraged to find attractive, while a mom bod is something women are encouraged to fix?
Make that make sense.
